All Dressed UpTuesday 21st July - Sunday13th September |
This summers heritage exhibition brings together a collection of period costume and fashion from Georgian times through to the 1980's.
"One of the things the exhibition helps us understand, is that things we remember are also historical, which is why it was important for us to included clothes from the later periods" explains Ron Helsby, Executive Director of the centre.
The Georgian mans jacket includes exquisite embroidery in jewel like colours and a lot of the early clothes are hand stitched because there were no sewing machines, Marks and Spencer's and Primark.
The exhibition also has examples of how people changed their clothes for daytime and evening wear... check out the hand beading on the flapper dress. This piece is shown without its black silk underskirt so that visitors can see just how intricate the beading is.
"One of the most stunning pieces is a delicate champagne silk embroidered Edwardian evening dress. If you look carefully its not really a dress at all, its a two piece suit. Some of the older costumes like this dress have never been on display before because the are so fragile" says Hannah Longworth, Curator at The World of Glass. "It has been great fun working on this exhibition because its helped me understand how much we have changed, people were a lot smaller not only in height but in their body size. Even the clothes we have been loaned from the 50's have really tiny waists and only just fit on our mannequins"
The exhibition highlights just how relaxed we have become socially. The clothes from the 80's are a mix of Dallas style evening wear, Punk shirt, jeans and jacket and a very frilly new romantic unisex shirt. There is also a a dressing up area where you can try on the clothes from the different periods.
All Dressed Up will run at The World of Glass from July 21 until September 13.
